Nā Pahuhopu / Goals
Nā Pahuhopu:
- Ulu ka hoi – To nurture interest in and enjoyment of ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, leading to further pursuit of Hawaiian language knowledge and ability.
- ʻOluʻolu – To provide a comfortable, low-stress setting for the acquisition of basic Hawaiian competency through:
- simple and fun communicative language activities
- practice in correct pronunciation
- development of knowledge of basic vocabulary
- learning “functional chunks” of language as opposed to in-depth analysis of grammar
- Hele a maʻa i ka puana pololei – To increase familiarity of participants with correct Hawaiian usage through ongoing pronunciation practice.
- Ma ka hana ka ʻike – To normalize an awareness of, competency in, and appreciation for the importance of the Hawaiian language in the university and community contexts through experiential learning experiences.
- Launa aloha – To introduce Hawaiian greetings for use in conversation (face-to-face, telephone, written commmunications, and electronic media).
- Hoʻoulu kaiaulu – To facilitate a community of learners to support each other in the fun and rewarding experience of using (and contributing to the growth of) the Hawaiian language in the university setting.
